Queer/ing Urban Space and Time

Andrea B. Braidt, Ana Hoffner, Anna T., Vienna

This break-out session will address questions concerning the gendering of urban space and time. Point of departure is a critique of urban spatiality as heteronormative space, point of reference are practices – artistic, scholarly, research-based, activist – that seek to reflect and/or deconstruct this normative matrix. The focus will lie on questions such as: How are urban spaces defined as gendered or sexual spaces? What codes and markers make queer spaces in cities visible and recognizable? For whom are specific gendered spaces readable and how does this readability change the city space? What are the national and historic specificities of gendered and sexualised urban spaces?
