Workshop on
Practice-based PhD
Supervision

James Swinson,
University of the Arts London (UAL): Central Saint Martins

The workshop will provide a brief introduction to the provision for training supervisors at UAL and raise issues in Art & Design practice-based supervision pedagogy in the UK. This will be followed by group discussions of the similarities and differences in supervisory experience and training across Europe, drawing on the experiences and insights of the participants in the workshop.

Interdisciplinary Approaches in Art & Design

A key aspect of PhD in art and design are the interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies that have emerged from the research. A recent symposium at UAL: Crossing Boarders - Interdisciplinarity and the PhD in Art & Design will be referenced to provide a framework for discussion:

•To explore the management and supervision of Art and Design PhD

•To review what has been learned over a decade of experience of Higher Degrees in the sector and the now visible presence of a PhD student culture as the number of registered students and successful completions continues to rise.

•To explore innovative methodologies and interdisciplinary research questions which are increasingly evident in students’ proposals.

•To consider examples of good practice emerging that encourage and support these academic and creative migrations?
