Tarja Pitkänen-Walter

Tarja Pitkänen-Walter is a practicing artist and Professor of painting at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. She completed her Doctorate in Fine Arts (2006) exploring haptic visuality and multi-sensoriness in painting. Her art practice, which spans thirty years, investigates painting process through material thinking, resulting in expanded paintings.

Her most recent solo exhibition was in Oulu Art Museum (2011). Recent group exhibitions include for example 5x5CASTELLÓ10, International contemporary art prize Diputacio de Castelló, Spain, 2010; Dialogues in Space, Mimara Museum, Zagreb (2010); Får ej övertäckas, Eskilstuna Artmuseum, Sweden (2009);  The Site of Painting, Pori Art museum (2009); Image and After, Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki (2008); Arte Finlandesa 2008, MuBE, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Pitkänen-Walter has engaged in several trustee and art expertise positions, for example the vice-chairperson of the National Council for Visual Arts in Finland (2004-2009).
