David Bate

Davie Bate is an artist and writer/theorist. His publications include the monograph Zone and the two books Photography and Surrealism (IB Tauris, 2004) and Photography: Key Concepts (Oxford: Berg, 2009) - recently translated into Japanese, Italian, and Chinese, also forthcoming in Slovenian.

He is co-editor of Photographies journal and author of dozens of essays and articles on art, photography and culture in other books and journals. His own photographic practice, works with still and moving images tend to focus on questions of location and issues of otherness and alterity. He was co-founder member of Accident Gallery in 1997 and Five Years, the artist collective. His recent works include Australian Picnic, Bungled Memories and Touristica. His forthcoming book Photography After Postmodernism (2012) will make a major contribution to rethinking the visual world of images and its study. He is currently Professor of Photography at the University of Westminster in London, UK.
